When using JPEG images, conventionally used with digital cameras, if you repeatedly edit and save the images, the image data or image quality will deteriorate. While JPEGs are processed directly inside the camera, using the camera makers own software and its processes, RAW files are only processed later, on a computer. RAW files contain the maximum amount of data. This compression can affect quality, but this loss of quality isn’t noticeable to most users. RAW is the name given to an image file type that records image data captured by the camera's image sensor without any processing. Raw files are 16 bit images, having 4096 tones per color channel, thereby producing over 68 billion colors. You could also change the input to be a selector from Photos if you want to. JPG is a ‘lossy’ format, meaning that it is compressed to save storage space and make it easier to share. A much easier method is this is to create the following simple shortcut which will allow you to convert a RAW photo to JPEG from the Share Sheet. The image you see on your LCD is most likely a JPEG derived from the RAW file you shot. JPEG stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group, which is the name of the committee that standardised the format. It has not yet done any editing to the image. However, you can usually adjust settings to save into other formats if needed. Many cameras, smartphones, and basic photo or drawing programs will automatically save into JPG format. JPGs are 2D pixel-based ‘raster’ images, which makes them better for photographs or scans, rather than digital illustrations which are often better as ‘vector’ images. I have been taking my photos in RAW for a while but a lot of the time I dont really do much with them and they just sit there in RAW taking up space when. JPG is a universal format which can be opened by almost all image-viewing or -editing programs, by web browsers, and by certain other apps, and they’re supported by most devices. JPG, or JPEG, is one of the most widely used digital image formats. Your camera will also probably let you save photos into other image formats. As RAW is the default for many cameras, you can usually open the files with the software that came with your camera, or with photo-viewing apps or software like Adobe Photoshop. People often need or prefer to convert RAW images into other formats to upload them to websites or social media channels, or to share them with others. Compressed or lossy formats like JPEG can be shared more easily online. The downside of RAW files is that they can have very large file sizes. If you do, you still have to do the processing in your computer. The reason these hi-spec camera companies take and store RAW images is that they’re usually uncompressed lossless files, retaining all image data in high resolution. Most fancy digital cameras allow you to save the raw data instead of the actual JPG picture. Many digital cameras, including Sony, Nikon and Canon, will use RAW as the default format. The format’s full name is ‘Raw Image Data file’. RAW files are a type of format for digital images, particularly photographs.
